tropical hillside garden

This is an east facing rear garden near Bridport, Dorset with views across the hills to the south over the top of neighbouring bungalows. The garden is 13 x 10m in size.  It had been primarily laid to lawn, fruit trees and conifers with a small pond, above an unattractive blockwork retaining wall, through which were narrow, steep steps from a tired looking patio near the house.

At the top of the garden was a large rectangular vegetable bed. The clients wanted a more accessible garden with a summer house at the top to take advantage of the view, and an attractive patio and fish pond near the house. They also wanted space to grow a few vegetables.

Requirements for the new garden design/landscape architecture:

  • A patio near the house with a large fish pond

  • Wider steps through a more attractive retaining wall

  • A summer house and patio with a view of the hills

  • A lawn

  • Tropical style planting as it is near the south coast

  • A vegetable area

This garden was constructed by Fatleaf, Beaminster.
